For England and Wales - the major source is the GRO (General? Register Office) in London (or online) for BMDs after July 1837.
You can go to the local registration offices and it used to be cheaper to do so but isn't now - especially from overseas. You also need different information which isn't as readily available as the GRO index references - and often is what you are wanting to find out.
Registration Districts in England don't follow county boundaries but are another unit again not normally included in a location.
I began to understand why US people are so obsessed with County information when I realised that was where many basic US records are to be found. Australian records are held on a State or National level.
