Hi Jim,
I am afraid that I have never used Photoshop so am unable to make a comparison with The GIMP but since The GIMP is free and does all I require I very much doubt if I shall ever use Photoshop.
Obviously The GIMP is an image manipulation program and hence its use in genealogy is limited but on my Pedigree Chart and web pages it has been used for cutting, enlarging and cleaning up photographs, particularly the very old ones Many of these were in a very poor state indeed.
Additionally you may have noticed in the family album on my web site two oval photographs, these have a transparent background for which I used The GIMP. I also use these on the Pedigree Chart. They are of Charles William Lowe and Joseph Percy Kenworthy and the same photo has a green background on Legacy a lime background on my web pages ( .......fergys/genealogy/70.html and....../297.html) and
a pinkish on the family album page.
I don't know how long it takes to get used to Photoshop but I do admit it took me quite a while to get used to The GIMP and for me its main use is in photo manipulation.
Hope this helps
Ron Ferguson

Hi John,
Many thanks and my apologies. I am afraid I mistyped the address. It should read:

Ron and LUGers,
I noticed that you have The GIMP displayed on your home page. How do you like it? How do you use it in your genealogy work?
I have read comparisons of The GIMP and Photo Shop and The GIMP seems to do about 90% of what Photo Shop can do. Plus the interface is much the same. In your opinion, is this true?
