Bill: I would follow the outline that Legacy shows at: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/SourceWeb.asp and which is further explained on the CD "Ultimate Guide to Sources".
In these examples, the source citation is to the actual specific database used at the site. The web site would be considered the "repository" of the database which can be separately identified. (The parent company can be sorted out any time and the repository information updated.) I think it's also important to include the date searched, information about how the search was constructed, and the database version and possible the range of results reviewed. Personally, I also like to include the URL of the resulting hit that I wind up using. However, URLs change all to frequently! But I feel it's better to have something rather than nothing. My goal in creating a citation (with the attendant repository) for web based data or indexes is to provide the reader (or future researcher) enough information to be able to do the search again himself. That way, he would be able to follow our research trail completely. Of course, it will be important to note whether the information used is primary source material (eg: a census image), an index to primary material (an index to a census), or unverified results from another researcher. Hope this is helpful...../Jeremy -----Original Message----- From: Bill Daniels <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: May 1, 2005 10:25 AM To: Legacy Group <[email protected]> Subject: [LegacyUG] citing a online source A recent notice showed a web site for citing a source. It shows the proper citing such as for online citing. : 1.) Search engine owner or complier, 2.) "name of search engine" 3.) Online publisher, online published date, 4.) url of search engine, 5.) exmained for scope of search, 6.) search engine access date. If I remember correctly Ancestry .com bought out Genealogy .com and Ancestry.com is owned by Myfamily .com therefore myfamily.com also owns Genealogy.com. I have no idea about who owns rootweb.com. examples from the article: 1. Genealogy.com, "All databases," (Online: Genealogy.com, LLC, 1996-2001), <www.genealogy.com>, examined for any reference to A., Arch, Archie, or Archibald Gregory, accessed 25 December 2001. 2. Rootsweb.com, "Rootsweb Meta Search," (Online: MyFamily.com, Inc., 2001), <www.rootsweb.com>, examined for any reference to first name Archibald and last name Gregory, accessed 24 December 2001. 3. Ancestry.com, "AIS Census Indexes, 1790-1870," (Online: MyFamily.com, Inc., 2001) [Original published by R. V. Jackson, ed., Accelerated Indexing Systems, Inc., 19--], <http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/census/ais/main.htm>, examined 1870 for reference to Archibald Gregory, accessed 20 December 2001. So now my quwestions: 1. From the the sample 1. above would it not be correct to have My Family.com as the [3.) Online publisher, online published date, ] ? 2. from all of the listed web sites below who are the listed parent companys. website parent company genealogy.com ? rootweb.com ? ancestry.com myfamily.com myfamily.com myfamily.com cousinconnection.com ? mytrees.com Kindred gencircles.com ? onegreatfamily.com ? If any one web site needs to be correcyted please tell me. If anyone can add the parent company please do so. If there is a major web site I left out please add it. thanks bill daniels Legacy User Group Etiquette guidelines can be found at: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp To find past messages, please go to our searchable archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup%40mail.millenniacorp.com/ To unsubscribe please visit: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/LegacyLists.asp Legacy User Group Etiquette guidelines can be found at: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp To find past messages, please go to our searchable archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup%40mail.millenniacorp.com/ To unsubscribe please visit: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/LegacyLists.asp
