I normally would not use the battle/battlefield for death location. The specific location of death for Shiloh would be >>, Hardin County (near Shiloh), Tennessee<<. An event can then be created for military service which can go into more detail. as to the battle involved, specific location of the battlefield, etc. I also go to Civil War Soldier and Sailors Search at http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/Personz_Search1.cfm for additional info on the individual and his unit which I add to the event info - - his military death info can also be entered here. This can add a more personal touch. Also, you might wish to try and find out if he is in a recorded grave or just disappeared, as so many did. In cause of death I enter either "battle casualty of Civil War" or "casualty of Civil War" (if he died of disease, accident, etc). I am sure others have other ways of handling but this is what I do.

Subject: [LegacyUG] How or Where do I enter deaths in battle?

I am a very new Legacy user and attempting (struggling more like it) to reconcile my old database to a format consistent in Legacy.
Legacy appears to have such wonderful and exciting possibilities, if I can ever get past this stage.

(1) For those who have died in war, I have always entered in the category of death locations, such as = Battle of Shiloh - Civil War.

Apparently, the format for legacy doesn't agree with this type of entry. I haven't the foggiest notion of where I am suppose to enter this death location.

(2) Also, I have reviewed (many times) the earlier postings to this newsgroups, have the User's Guide and several cd's and I still don't have a clear understanding of where to enter cemeteries.
(3) Perhaps, I don't understand why a battlefield is not the location of death or a cemetery is not the burial location.

I would so appreciate any help.

Thank you - from an overwhelmed new user,
Anna
