Pam,

"Can I assume that the latest Pocket Genealogist is OK for Legacy version
4.0 as I haven't upgraded to 5 yet?"

You can do "direct" imports from Legacy V4, but the feature that allows
direct update back into Legacy or "Refreshing" the database on the device
after changes are made in Legacy only works with V5.

"Is there much difference between a 3.5" and 4" screen from a user point of
view?"

Surprisingly, the extra 1/2 inch does make a huge difference. (At least in
my opinion, it seems a lot bigger) My guess is that the 4" version is also
the VGA version (hx4700) which has two benefits.

1. In "Non-VGA" mode, the screen is much "crisper".

2. In "VGA" mode (by making the text smaller), you can see more on the
screen.

Here's a link to some screen prints that shows what you can do with VGA.

And here are ones using the Legacy Sample database:

"I am also assuming after reading the last couple of emails on this subject
that if I get one with say "up to 135 MB user available memory" that this is
a good thing and would be more than adequate for Pocket Genealogist and my
data from Legacy? Is this description of the memory what I should be
comparing between models? (I have found the way memory is described in the
literature a bit confusing!)"

There are basically 3 types of memory.

1. RAM - this is what you would consider "normal" memory. It is used to
store data, programs and is the memory that is needed when a program runs.
(memory used by the program at run-time) This is perhaps the most
important memory you can get on the device.

2. ROM - this is where the operating system is stored. The newer models
(anything made in the last year or so) also allows you to use this memory
to to store data. (HP calls it the iPaq File Store) This is "persistant"
memory, if you lose power, the data in this location won't be lost. (This
will become very important with the new Windows Mobile 5 - see below)

3. Storage Card - Storage card memory should be thought of as like a "hard
disk". You can store programs and data on it, but programs can't use this
as "Run time memory"... Programs can use this memory like a hard disk
though.

The "up to 135MB user available memory" is probably a combination of #1 and
#2.

Not to confuse the issue, but the next version of Windows Mobile (probably
available early fall) changes how it uses memory. #1 above will be used
only for program run-time use, and #2 will be used to store data and
programs. (so effectively, you shouldn't lose any data if you have a power
outage) HP and Dell both have announced which models will be upgradable to
the new version (for a fee, no prices have been announced but it probably
will be about $30 USD) so if you want to plan for possibly upgrading in the
future, you might want to purchase a device that will support the upgrade.
(there's nothing wrong with the current operating system version either, new
versions come out about every year or two - generally the device
manufacturers will offer one upgrade so even if you can upgrade to the new
Windows Mobile 5, it's not likely that the subsequent version will be
available for the device)

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Using Legacy with handhelds

Many thanks to everyone who has provided advice on handhelds and genealogy
applications both on the list and privately. I got more help here than at
any retail store I tried (the assistants are all aged "12" and you have to
know the right questions to ask to get the right answers - sort of defeats
the purpose of asking really!) I will probably get an HP iPAQ as I can get
one cheaper via a friend, but am still working on which model to get. And
will also use Pocket Genealogist as it has had such great reviews.

Thought that maybe I should think about what else they can do too - as there
*may* be more to life than just genealogy :-)

Some further queries:
- Can I assume that the latest Pocket Genealogist is OK for Legacy version
4.0 as I haven't upgraded to 5 yet?
- Is there much difference between a 3.5" and 4" screen from a user point of
view?
- I am also assuming after reading the last couple of emails on this subject
that if I get one with say "up to 135 MB user available memory" that this is
a good thing and would be more than adequate for Pocket Genealogist and my
data from Legacy? Is this description of the memory what I should be
comparing between models? (I have found the way memory is described in the
literature a bit confusing!)

Once again - thanks to all - I am about to take the plunge and finally make
a purchase!

Cheers
Pam
in NZ without any snakes so I can probably give the one with the phone a
miss ;-) Mind you the GPS might help if I got lost in the bush tracking
places where my ancestors lived<g>
