Carol,
I've not used freefind, but did have some past success using a similar tool
from Google. I dropped that later because it wouldn't work correctly after
I made some "minor" changes the html in an attempt to use a smaller Google
icon and modify the format somewhat, but I'm not that great on html, so ???
I always modify the Legacy-outputted webpages (now using Frontpage 2003)
primarily to add my own custom headers and footers. Frontpage includes a
tool for searching such as you ask about, which would probably require using
a server with FP server extensions installed. As my website is larger that
the (past?) limits for FPSE, I am not using the FP tool until/unless I
verify that FP2003 is different than past versions in that regard.
Regardless, I agree that some sort of search tool as you inquire about would
be very useful if integrated into our Legacy webpage output, so I'd vote for
that!

Subject: [LegacyUG] Searching a Legacy Generted Web Page
While taking a workshop, last Saturday< I was informed of a "search tool"
service called http://www.freefind.com/ This search engine would allow
users to do all name search on you web site. This seems to be a good
idea,
as it could allow users to quickly search your site for surname they are
researching without having to "click-through" several pages to see if the
web-site contains information on their ancestors.
I think it could be a useful tool, but have no experience using it? Has
any
on used it or similar tools to enhance their web sites?
Carol
