Keeping my old FTM habits (it was pretty fussy about what words it allowed in date fields) I tend to keep things like calculated and estimated out of the date field altogether, and put them elsewhere.

For instance, last year I received a file containing a number of dates that were "WFT Est" with very large ranges. The old version of FTM I was using at the time didn't let me put "WFT Est" in the date field, so I used Between and put "WFT Estimate" as a source.

I also created a source called "inferred date" for some kinds of Before and After dates. For instance, in that same file I would often have the date of a second marriage but no death information for the first spouse. Well, this was 17th century Quebec, so it was reasonable to infer that the first spouse had died before the date of the second marriage.
