Carol, I can edit the Individual ON the Name List, without double-clicking on anyone. Just to the right of the list is everything I've ever needed. But, maybe I just haven't run into what you are doing - I'm not a full-time user.
Ah, wait, upon double-checking... I see you can't define the columns in the Name List to include Birth Date. However, by selecting the tab on the right side that says "Edit", you can see the birth date for the highlighted person. I then just click on each "Michael Doody" in the Name List and can see their birth dates... if one matches the new person I'm entering, then I can look at the other data to determine if there's a match. Also, in the Name List mine are NOT shown in Birth Date order... they are in RIN order.
