Anne
I have made CD's for family members and once they received them I had to call and walk them through opening the CD and help them with the printing of a Book..I found they did not have everything checked on there Legacy Descendant Narrative part like mine so they were not getting all my information..If you e-mail me I'll help you with it..
this is what you do first
Go to Reports on the top of the page.........
All Reports (Books & others)..........
Descendant Narrative..........
I had to put in 250 in the Generations spot to get everything........
down to the bottom to Report Options...
Go down the line and check mark all you want ..There is a children of each spouse on there..
There are many more things I can help you with..
I was lucky enough to have great help from this group. One person sent me directions in detail so I would understand it..
So again a Big THANK YOU to all on this group!!!

I also have Legacy 5.0.0.247. "Children of each spouse" is available in the=

Ancestor Book options and works as intended. The Descendent Book options=20 has "Children of each spouse" greyed-out. Are you sure you're running the=20
Ancestor Book?

I noticed that marriage information, other parents

spouses do come out.

Please forgive me I sound dumb; it's just that I cannot fathom some fine
points about Source Clipboard, even after studying carefully the extensive
Help information under "Clipboard."

What I conclude is that if you don't "set" your source when your first enter
it, it's not available for a clipboard. I do not see any way to go to
existing master sources and save them to clipboards; it seems I have to
start all over again.

There is a paragraph in a Help file called "Quick Copy Existing Citations to the Source Clipboard" whose opening line would seem to resolve my problems: "You can copy one or more (up to five) source citations you have showing for
the current individual onto the Source Clipboard by clicking (graphic) in
the lower-left corner of the screen. The graphic is the twin-page clipboard
icon, but I don't see it on my screen. On the family page the only icon in
the left-hand corner is "Show Bookmark List"; editing pages don't have it
either..

The underlying challenge I'm facing is tryng to access different master
lists as I break off pieces from the general family file. Ideally for me
would be a general list that includes absolutely every source I've entered.
Right now, some files have more than others, and I'm looking for a way to
have one place to dip into now and then for a cut and paste.

I have Legacy 5 Deluxe.

I realize this is confusing and welcome anyone else to chime in and make

Yep I am sure. I am getting the ancestors.

I just checked the Beta Versions I have and they
don't have the field greyed out, so something must
have happened when I upgraded to V 5.0.0.226.

Guess I just have to try downloading and installing again,
or possbly I'll have to uninstall and then install to get this working.
It is however odd.

I found a way to add a background picture to a Legacy Pedigree chart,
though it's a bit of a hack. Someone may have a more straightforward
method.

Briefly:
1. Add an Apple LaserWriter on "File" to Windows. (LaserWriter files
are PostScript format)
2. "Print" the pedigree chart to the LaserWriter file.
3. Rename xxx.prn to xxx.ps
4. With a graphics program that works with PostScript files (I used
the Gimp), import your picture as the background layer and the
PostScript as the top layer.

If you don't like the looks of the pedigree chart you'll have to go
back to Legacy to change fonts, options etc. -- there isn't much you
can do with it as a graphic layer.

Just another wild thought. Go the the Help, About Legacy, General
screen and check that your customer number has been entered. It
may be that the feature is only available in the Deluxe Edition.
If your customer number has not been entered Legacy may think it
is running as the free edition with some features disabled.

Just checked the *Standard Edition* I use. It is version 5.0.0.226 Build Date 14 Apr 2005. The Ancestor Book Report prints with details of all children.

Seems like this feature that printed details of all children was disabled in the
last update, Anne.

What is the matter, MillenniaCorp? With each update you'll seem to be crippling
the *Standard Edition*

I don't think it makes much difference as long as it's PostScript

Subject: [LegacyUG] Address Book Creation?
Reply-To: [email protected]
Hello,

I am new here so I hope the post gets to the right place. I purchased
Legacy Deluxe 5.0
a few months ago and my Family Tree Data compilation is really coming
along now.
I was using a program called "Family Ties" before and it cheap and I
got what I paid for.

A family reunion is being planned and I hope to be able to present the
fruits of my
labor at that reunion in 2007. In addition I am trying to compile names
& addresses
for the reunion committee.

My question to you smart folks is "how to I create an address book from
the data I
have in Legacy Deluxe 5.0." I see the labels menu but I must be
overlooking something as
I am sure that this program should have the capability to print out all
address and phone data.
I don't want to have to print out and re key the data into some other
database program
to print out a book.

Thanks in advance.

I have the lates update (Deluxe 5.0.0.247, June 12, 2005) and the kids are
doing just fine in the Ancestors Book. Something else is going on here ...

I just checked the Beta Versions I have and they don't have the field greyed

Guess I just have to try downloading and installing again, or possbly I'll
have
to uninstall and then install to get this working. It is however odd. >> Anne

Just checked the *Standard Edition* I use. It is version 5.0.0.226 Build Date 14 Apr 2005. The Ancestor Book Report prints with details of all children.

Seems like this feature that printed details of all children was disabled
in the
last update, Anne.

What is the matter, MillenniaCorp? With each update you'll seem to be
crippling
the *Standard Edition*

I do not have much experience with the address features in Legacy
myself but I have experimented a bit with the printing of
addresses and the only feature I could find was the address labels.

I guess the idea is that Legacy prints the special labels you can
buy (It seems to know about the Avery company's various sizes but
does let you design your own by using the custom size feature)
then peal and stick them to envelopes for mailing. If you want to
use that to create a "Address Book" You could simply print the
formatted label sheets on plain paper.

It is fairly flexible in terms of deciding what fields you want
to print and will make sure that what you have selected will fit
on the size label you have specified.

The work flow seems to be:

Use View, Master Lists, Addresses Mailing Addresses to list all
the addresses you have.

Tag the addresses you want to print for the particular task you
have in hand i.e. The first time it may be to everyone inviting
them to the reunion. Later you may only want to send a letter to
those who have accepted the invitation. The Tag column is right
on the address list.

Once you have tagged your addresses use the Print Address labels
screen and tell Legacy to print only tagged addresses. By the
way, when you have the address list open if you press the options
button the print option in the list that appears will take you
directly to the print labels screen. You do not have to close the
address list and use the Reports, All reports and books menu to
select the address labels.

Did you notice the Name Tags option in the Reports screen. You
can use that to make quite attractive name tags for the people at
the reunion. It can include The Name of the Event, a picture,
Address data and a mini three generation pedigree chart. A nice
touch to let those who don't know a person make a connection to
where they fit in the family tree. It is also designed to make
use of the perforated Avery Name Tags you can buy that fit those
little plastic pin-on name tag holders.

By the way, one option on the print labels screen is to output to
a text file. You may be able to use that text file to import the
address data into another program if you really want an address
book. I did not experiment with that but if you have the Use
Quotes and force all fields to a single line options turned on a
data base program may be able to accept that type of text input.
It would save you the effort of re typing all your address data.

Many thanks for your reply. I didn't have the file. To stop Legacy searching I have uninstalled all Legacy files and reinstalled in a separate folder and
everything is working now.

Again my thanks,

Anne

Well, the Legacy.lng file is a language file. Did you, or have
you run Legacy in a language other than english? If that is the
case perhaps Legacy is looking for the "foreign" language file.
In your Legacy directory there should be a file, language.usr. It
is text so you can open it in Notepad. In that file is the
language Legacy uses as the default. If that file contains
something other than English you may not have installed the
language it is looking for when you did the reinstall.

You mention is a later message that you have had previous
versions installed in other places. It may be that Legacy is
looking for the Legacy.lng in those locations an cannot find it
because the latest install is in a different location. You do say
however that the Legacy.lng file seems to be missing. Have you
done a search of "My Computer" with the search subdirectories
option on?

Hope some of this helps.

To create a database from the Address list -

1. On the Master Mailing Address list, select Options / Print.
2. Choose who and what to print from the relevant tabs.
3. Select text file as output. Uncheck "With quotes".
4. Click Create and save text file - adding .csv extension to the file name.
5. This can then be opened as a database in Excel or similar or imported
into Outlook etc.

Robert Silverwood
