We just got a new laptop and are leaving on vacation in the morning.
I want to load Legacy 5.0 on to the laptop. Would someone please tell
me how to do it and make it work asap? Also, should I make a gedcom
of my data and load it into the laptop? Nothing like a last minute
thing to do when going on vacation, but doing some genealogy on the
way.
Thank you,
Janet
OK Janet, Here goes. I am including your private email in the
hopes that might reach you sooner.
I am assuming the following: Your Legacy is already installed on
a desktop machine, both the desktop and the laptop have CD's and
the desktop has a CD Writer.
If you kept the full install file when you originally installed
Legacy on the desktop it will save you having to download another
copy. If you have broadband it might be worth it anyway to get
the most recent build.
On the Desktop machine burn a CD with the following:
1. The Legacy Setup Program
2. A Copy of your Legacy Data file (no need to make a GEDCOM
since the second Legacy can read the file)
3. I don't know how you store your data but if you want to
salvage any pictures and multimedia you have you will also have
to copy all your pictures and multimedia files to the same
directory on the laptop where they were stored on the desktop. If
you've used the Legacy defaults these are subdirectories of the
Legacy Program Directory
Eg. C:\Legacy is the main file directory with subdirectories for
Pictures, Sound and Videos.
4. For any customizations of Legacy and to save you having to
make them all again also copy all the *.usr and .rf1 files from
the Desktop Legacy directory to the CD. These files contain all
the special settings you have set up in report options and the
options customize screen.
5. Use the CD to install Legacy on the Laptop.
6. Copy the .usr and .rf1 files from the Cd to the laptop's
Legacy Directory. Say yes to overwrite the ones created by the
installation.
7. Either Create the special directories you have used for data
pictures sounds and videos or copy the contents of the Pictures
Sounds and Videos Directories from the Desktop to the laptop.
8. Copy the Data file from the CD to the Data SubDirectory or to
whichever directory you kept it on the Desktop.
9. Start Legacy and Open the Data file.
10 Browse a few people to see if their pictures etc show up, if
so all is well.
11. Have a Great Vacation
