Hi folks,

I've been using Legacy for about 6 months now, and it's the only
program I've used. I've taken on the project of computerising my
family tree from my Dad. It's quite a small tree by the
standards I've seen on the LUG, with only about 500 people at
present (How do you keep up with 37,000 people? The mind
boggles!). My Dad is computer illiterate, and all attempts at
computer education by me or my siblings have failed, so I said
I'd try to help out with computerising the genealogy records.
This is my first time to pose a question to the LUG, although
I've been an avid daily reader, and have found many tips to help
me out.

My question, though, is how you treat middle names. For example,
my full name on both my birth and baptismal cert is Dermot
Michael McG...., but I practically never use Michael and never
have, except for official documents which specifically ask for
full name. Most Irish people (at least, those that I know!) have
two names like this. Most of us (at least the Roman Catholics)
also have a third name which we took at confirmation (mine is
Andrew, after my father).

When entering details onto Legacy, I'd be interested to know how
you deal with this? Do you put Dermot Michael as the given name,
do you put Dermot as the given name, and Dermot Michael as an
AKA, or what? And how would you deal with the Andrew, if at all?
I never use that anywhere, although I assume the church would
have a record of it.

On a slightly different tack, my mother's name on her birth &
baptismal certs is Mary-Ellen Patricia C...., but she's always
been called Patricia. Most people, even her best friends, don't
know her as anything other than Patricia (or Patti). How would
you note this in Legacy?

Thanks in advance for your help, and keep up the great work,

Dermot.

P.S. I noticed one post a few months ago commenting on the youth
of a LUGger. By my reckoning, I'm probably one of the youngest,
being "only" 34. Do I win a prize <G>e
