Kevin replied to my posting as follows below. A very interesting
reply. I've interspersed my comments in the appropriate places.

That may be, but I've NEVER been to a library that wouldn't
allow them. In fact the Genealogy Society library I frequent
accomodates them by having separate desks with power hookups!

If I went to a library that didn't allow them, I'd complain to the
person telling me to take it out, that their library should enter the
20th century! It is after all now the 21st century! If I was feeling
really snippy I'd ask to have a chat with the head librarian.

I have a notbook "case" with the shoulder strap. I just sling it over my
shoulder
and it's not a problem for me. I agree it was awkward to use in a cemetery.
However, I've had problems reading the screens on some of those pocket
appointment keepers too -- even indoors!

You are also correct that I cannot put the laptop in my pocket. But having
it under my arm like a heavy notebook isn't a lot different from what I
used to do walking back and forth to school every day from the time I
was in third grade! It actually weighs less than the notebooks and text
books
(combined) I used to carry back and forth.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. I'm not trying to convert
you
to Laptops by any means. If you like pocket PC's better than Laptops, well
Bully for you (as they used to say in the old days). I just prefer Laptops
and
that was what the original question was as I recall. That is: "What are the
pros and cons of one or the other?"
