Would someone please explain what a "witness feature" is?

Thanks---
Donna

Donna -- In genealogy programs that use it, "witness" does not necessarily
mean "witness to an event" (wedding witnesses, for example), although the
witness function can be used in those circumstances.

Instead "witness" means something much more general, that is "anyone
participating in an event" or "anyone -- in addition to the principal
participant -- that you want to associate with an event." The most common
(and time-saving usage) is in recording census data as events. You simply
record the event for the "principal" (head of household) and then add as
witnesses the remainder of the household. I REALLY miss this feature in
Legacy, so I try to simulate it with the event clipboard. Nevertheless the
event clipboard copying is far more time consuming that simply typing in
witness MRINs (which is what I could do with a witness feature).

In another example, if I were abstracting a death certificate, I would
attach at "witnesses" everyone named in the death certificate including
parents (often long since deceased), informant children, perhaps even the
undertaker, especially if he is already in my database as a relative. After
attaching the witness information, the death certificate would appear in the
events list for each of the witnesses, even though some of them could not
have possibly been present for the event.

Typically, also, each witness is assigned a "role," making it very clear
that they are not the principal in the event. Report options allow you to
include witness events or not. The entire function is a wonderful research
tool that allows you to prepare an even more complete timeline of documents
in which your ancestors appear.

Hope this helps,
