And here I go with a way that works for me
John DOE with a wife named Mary
I enter Mary [m. John DOE] Unknown
I have been doing this for only 3 months but I do others as they come up &
it helps me to get correct first names on both men and women

Hi Richard,
Re searching for Mary Smith -
Here's a suggestion of another alternative, that works for me. I can't
take credit for it though. I learned it from a dear friend.
Given name - Mary (spouse of John
Surname - Smith)
On the marriage record it shows as Mary (spouse of John Smith).
Because there is no paren at the beginning of the surname, in the name
list it appears with the other Smith names, but at the end of the Smith
list. Thus all of the Smith wives with unknown maiden surnames are grouped
together.
If I want to know all of the women without known maiden names, I can
search on "spouse".
Also, the use of the AKA helps. I learned about that thanks to listers.
For the AKA she would be
Given name - Mary
Surname - Smith
Suffix - Mrs.
That way I know immediately the marriage status of the AKA and it works
regardless of whether I know the maiden name. .
I know what you mean about changing the records one at a time. I have
almost 5000 marriages, so I can only gradually add the AKA. I've been
tagging the marriage as I do them to keep track of where I am.
