I was wondering if you did not want the person to show in the reports or the
birth and death information.  If it is just the dates have you tried using
the double brackets [[19 Nov 2005]], this will keep the date private without
using any other settings.
Another option you might try rather than deleting these people you want to
keep track of is to unlink them from their families. This will leave them in
your database should you ever want to link them again and you won't have to
reenter your information.
