If you put a comma after the "6" it creates another field which is why I
avoid doing it.

Just a small point - I would suggest inserting a comma, thus:,
6, Pulteney Road, Bath, Somerset, England.
This way, when you reverse sort order, you get all the Pulteney Road
entries together, sorted by house number. Very useful if you have
several families in the same street.
Omitting the comma sorts all the "6d" entries in Bath together.
