Our phone line was never over 30bps, usually 24bps so I downloaded a program called Star Downloader. I would schedule all my downloads for overnight. I had the program set up so it would dial up at 11:00 p.m., download whatever was listed and disconnect at 06:00 a.m. It also had an option to reconnect if the ISP dropped us offline which happened regularly.

The program is freeware and integrated well with my mozilla browser. Check it out at http://www.stardownloader.com/index.php

P.S. I am not affiliated in any way with Star!

I have the same problem, with dial-up connection at 26.1k top speed. I would think that an upgrade over the web would only download the changed components, and should be quite quick. 4 hours or more is just not doable from here. (Evidently most people have fast connections, because no one else has responded to this problem.)
