If you activate the pop option in gmail you can send and receive mails from
within your mail client (outlook etc.).
If pop is activated and you send mails via webmail than you will receive
your own sent mail in outlook (or other mail client) to archive in your sent
box in outlook (that's not the mail sent by the list but your own copy). The
other way round if you send a mail from within outlook via your gmail
account (in outlook) than you'll find your sent mail on the web in your
gmail sent box. In both cases you have proof your mail has been sent.
I hope this is correct ;-), anyway this is how my gmail account seems to
work for me.

Yes, exactly! When you are the Original Poster, you don't receive your own
message "from the List" - rather disconcerting, you can't tell whether your
message has received by other List Members. It sits in your Sent Folder
until someone answers it.
I can't understand why others are receiving their *original* posts to other
Lists - I never do.
