Thanks to all who helped me solve this problem and who told me about radio
buttons -- I'd never heard the term before!!

The key to the phrase "radio buttons" is that when you
select one, all of the others are automatically
unselected.
In the old days on car radios, as you remember, when
you pushed one in, the one that was already in popped
back out.
This is obviously a useful concept, and so it is
implemented in different forms on screens. As I
recall, the one you were working with was the Gender
set of butttons on the Individual window. You can
(obviously) be M, F, or Unknown, and so when you
select one, any one already selected is unselected.
A good example of a concept from way back in our youth
that is still valid!
