Your spreadsheet example works unless the person went by their middle
name and that's the only name you have for them and you don't know
whether you're dealing with a person's first or middle names. I
guess, if you were sure that John in your example was really the first
name, you could come up with a contrivance like "John <mnu> Doe" or
something.

I was asked to demo how to make a list of names in the family file, and from
that list, take out everyone with a first name, known *full* middle name,
and last name. That is, the names that remain would be of those without a
middle name and/or only the middle initial is known. In Legacy, I don't know
of a way to do this- the first name and middle name go in the same field.

However, I can do this nonetheless by opening the file in GenViewer, list
the RINs and then list the names by Surname, Given Name. Use GenViewer to
save and paste that into a spreadsheet, and have the spreadsheet perform a
"text to columns" function. That is, if B2 has Alexander Richard Craven,
then the name gets split into three columns with B2 holding Alexander, C2
holds Richard, and D2 holds Craven.

If B3 has Doe, John, then this feature breaks the name into B3= Doe, C3 =
John, and nothing in D3.

Sort by column D, then C, and then by B. Remove all the rows for which
column D in the row is NOT empty. Then what remains is a list of people for
whom you do not know the middle names.

My question: Is there a better way to do this?

Thank you.
