The inputs and outputs look like they have the same connector type (i.e. offset phone-jack style). I have a sneaking suspicion that there is no difference between the line signals of the inputs and outputs. This is speculation, but I wonder if we would be able to connect 6 motors to the brick by plugging 3 motors into the sensor ports?

Of course, this would not be possible with the regular Lego firmware, but if a lot of these operations not hardware dependant we could maybe make this possible in leJOS firmware. Here's hoping the Lego engineers didn't intentionally shut out this possibility.
