I had some problems uploading firmware on my main computer (it kept ending the
firmware download before reaching 100 - I tried at night, in dark, etc...). I
switched to a clean computer and it completed to 100%, but I had the same error
when it finished downloading, along with several rapid beeps from the RCX brick.
However it had the battery level on the LCD and it accepted leJOS code. I'm
using Java SDK 1.4, USB tower with RCX 2.0 brick.

I have tried downloading a programing onto the RCX just incase the firmware
write was successful, but it obviously was not:

download program
Tower error: bad response from rcx
Please make sure RCX has leJOS firmware and is in range.
The firmware must be in program download mode.
Turn RCX off and on if necessary.
After trying to load the leJOS firmware, the RCX seems to be back to "boot
mode".
I can download the Official lego firmware onto the brick at any time without
problems, but lejos is proving a real problem.
Any Help would be much appreciated.
