you are not alone, take a look at http://thenxtstep.blogspot.com/ .

Probably the NXT firmware was corrupted when it was transfered.

My short advice would be to press the reset button for 5 seconds,
this removes the firmware and puts the NXT brick into firmware
upload mode.

Then install the NXT software on a different computer,
I guess a mainstream MS-Windows machine would be best,
and try again to upload the firmware.
