Of course we could just hack the AVR firmware too :-). >From a quick look at the schematics, it is an I2C interface. The AVR does not have a crystal, and the I2C peripherals are being used so it is very likely that I2C is being used here (since it would be a lot of hard work for nothing to use these pins for some other protocol). Could quite easily hook up another AVR in parallel and trace what is happening on this bus.
