While I know this shouldn't be sent to the swap list, it may be of use to others in a similar predicament. MOST adb optical mice follow the rule you state- metal or otherwise reflective grid mousepad.. BUT Apparently relatively recently, Kensington released this:
http://us.kensington.com/html/6389.html which can be found around the web usually for under 30$- far less than most old-style grid mice commonly fetch. It's quite a bit slimmer than the standard Apple mouse of the time (hence, the name "little" mouse).
