While I know this shouldn't be sent to the swap list, it may be of use to
others in a similar predicament. MOST adb optical mice follow the rule you
state- metal or otherwise reflective grid mousepad.. BUT
Apparently relatively recently, Kensington released this:

http://us.kensington.com/html/6389.html

which can be found around the web usually for under 30$- far less than most
old-style grid mice commonly fetch. No scroll wheel, but macos pre-osx
doesn't really know what to do with a wheel without drivers anyway.

Oh, I spoke too soon! There was an EARLY attempt at an optical mouse
made for ADB macs, I remember using it at an old job of mine.

It's called the "Little Mouse" made by Mouse Systems. It's quite a bit
slimmer than the standard Apple mouse of the time (hence, the name
"little" mouse).

This being an early attempt at optical, though, it will ONLY work with
the special reflective METAL "mouse pad" that was included in the box
(i.e. you can't just turn it loose on a bare desk or any other type of
surface).
