Clearly, more work is needed.  At present, left and right arrow keys
in the minibuffer change the cursor in the body pane!

The present code is just about too difficult to understand.  I would
like to simplify it for the vim-binding project, but that may not be
easy...

Please be patient: I'm using my own code, and I'll try to patch it up
as I go along :-)
