I'm not sure exactly what is going on. It may be that things are back as they were: I can't say for sure--my visual memory isn't all that great. I did reinstall the fglrx driver out of desperation as no other drivers seem to be available. What I wanted to do, and to a certain extent have done successfully, is to use an external monitor with my laptop. But the monitor wants 1280 x 1024 resolution, something that the laptop doesn't support. So maybe I am seeing the following effects: 1. The external monitor doesn't look great because it doesn't have the best resolution. 2. The appearance of the laptop's screen is strongly affected by the viewing angle and viewing distance. Adding an external keyboard, while quite useful, may have contributed to the perceived drop-off in font quality. All of these are confusing factors--I simply can't say for sure whether things are back to as they were. My impression is not, but I could be fooling myself. I do know for sure, though, that the XP fonts look much better than the Ubuntu fonts do now, and I don't think I've ever noticed that difference, so my best guess is that the fonts are no longer as good as they once were. For sure there is a "shadow" around letters that I never noticed before.
