There is something a bit comic about spending almost 3 hours staring at a screen trying to figure out ways of making fuzzy characters go clear. Perhaps the comedy stems from my stubbornness :-) My major "victory" was editing /etc/Xll/xorg.conf to give myself 1280x1024 resolution. Of course that doesn't match the "native" resolution of the notebook, so who knows what effect that will have. And doubling the dpi from 96 to 192 was kinda cool, but some panels became too big to use :-(. All in all, an instructional, if eye-strain inducing day. In particular, it's good to know that recovery mode works pretty well.
