I have a bad feeling about the "icons disappearing" bug:

Any change to the tree redrawing code could create subtle *severe*
problems. As in data loss.
I'll attempt to identify the problem and a solution. If I do find a
solution we'll have to decide how safe it is. I think two full days
of testing will be needed at least before we could safely release rc1
after even a "harmless" change to actual redrawing code.
OTOH, may we just need to keep references around. That would probably
be the only really safe change.
