They come from the external file, at least for @thin nodes.  And it is
with @thin nodes that we are having problems.  This is surprising.  As
I said, maybe we are unknowing using the old @file logic somehow.  Or
maybe it's some weird interaction between the .leo file and the
external file.  There are various dictionaries that are supposed to
associate vnodes with gnx's.  Knowing when to init and when to
preserve these dictionaries is tricky.  There is no end of possible
hiding places for bugs.

Strange.  Anyway, it's not too useful to do armchair speculation.  I
must drive this bug into the open so that it can be studied and
