These changes guarantee that the next release must be called b2, not
rc1.  To pretend that this code is more than beta quality would be an
outright falsehood.

These changes are some of the biggest made since the one-node world.
Otoh, they are worth doing, for many reasons.  It is truly remarkable
how evil tnodeLists were.  Getting rid of them will (eventually :-) be
a big step forward.
