I've don't get this crash unless I disable the call to
sys.setdefaultencoding('utf-8') in sitecustomize.py.
I'm attempting to understand why various unit tests *do* fail with
sitecustomize.py disabled. It's tricky stuff. The tracebacks are
strange, and things seem to change when I trace with g.pdb. A
puzzle...
