I hope my stubbornness is not tiring, and please review the proposal above - it really goes a lot in the direction of the simplicity you are seeking (and I completely agree). Also, if point 5 seems too complicated for now, I think the proposed approach provides more data and accessibility even without it, so indeed simplicity is kept. > Please file a bug report against this.
