I especially like IPython's installation instructions at http://ipython.scipy.org/doc/stable/html/install/index.html All you see on this page is the big picture: take a look. Seeing this big picture helps a lot. And I also like the idea of presenting overview and quickstart sections. I plan to follow this organization for Leo's installation guide. Of course there will be modifications. For instance, the IPython docs give no explicit instructions for installing Python itself, other than readline on Windows.
