These lines in c5-core.css "lock" the position of all elements in the
slide::
html>body div#header, html>body div#footer, html>body
div#controls, html>body .slide {position: fixed;}
Commenting them out gives pretty much what I want. Naturally, I'll
override them in pretty.css.
In this case, the JavaScript doesn't really matter :-) It's purely
a .css matter.
So this is good--tweaking pretty.css should be enough to create the
slides I want.

P.S. As soon as I got on my bicycle this afternoon I got the big
picture of slides.js: it is manipulating the "currentSlide" attribute/
class/whatever. It's funny how the mind integrates information in the
background...
This was an important Aha: it clarified matters enough to ease the
massive confusion.
