I'm forgetting the obvious.  Most web pages scroll "automatically".
Presumably the css (or JavaScript??)  is doing something that actively
prevents scrolling.  Maybe the footer, which imo is completely
expendable.  Whatever it is, it can be fixed.

A bit later...

slides.s5.html is as vanilla an html file as one could want.  Nothing
but <div class="slide"> elements, to the first approximation :-)  But
figuring out the interactions between the html, css and JavaScript is
hairy.  I may have to start deconstructing things again...

Any help from webbies would be appreciated!
