You can indeed us \n in the abbreviation file, and you can selecting multiple lines when using the add-global-abbrev command works. Furthermore, list-abbrevs now shows newlines as '\n', that is '\\' followed by 'n' :-) Also, read-abbrev-file now turns abbreviation mode on.
