It exists because Knuth used those terms in his original CWEB system, and the term is also used in the noweb system. You could call this terminology a "blind spot": it is clear to me (and to other users of CWEB and noweb), but Leo has gotten so far away from the LP tools (and the tangling and untangling processes are so automatic) that the tangling/untangling terminology does seem to be out dated. Having said that, it's not clear what a better terminology would be: in some sense "tangling" does seem descriptive, and "untangling" clearly indicates that it is the reverse process. Furthermore, flattening is yet a separate process, though rarely used. Still, I would like something other than flattening/(unflattening?), if we can devise such a thing.
