Done at the trunk at rev 4076. All unit tests pass. One possible fix would have been to remove the assert, but a proper fix was challenging. Along the way I encountered and fixed two or three more bugs and glitches. The new code will say "no completions" and exit if you type ctrl-space (or the standard key bound to auto-complete-force) when no completions are valid. This makes sense--otherwise there is no point in doing ctrl-space while already in autocompletion. The new code is tricky. More fixes may be needed. Please report any further problems immediately.
