I discovered another workaround that is probably also a hint to the minor bug. Select any node other than the @url-with-a-file-url node that you want to double-click, then double-clicking the @url-with-a-file-url node opens the file-url in the file browser. Ctrl-click in a node body of a web-url always opens the url with the web browser. Ctrl-click in a node body of a file-url never opens the url.
