I like Blender's little ribbed triangles.  True, it's not obvious how
to use them, but they are visible.

In this case, I think the low-level drawing work would be worthwhile.
It's a visual cue, and if done like Blender it would be demo that
Blender does not, if fact, need it's own window system.
