This is an ancient thread.  There have been several unicode changes
since the thread started.

In general, you should always use Leo's @encoding directive when body
text has non-ascii text.

Recent versions of Leo will take the proper encoding from Python's
encoding comments of the form::

    @first # -*- coding: utf-8 -*-
