In the wee hours of this morning I played around with simplifying g.es, g.pr, g.es_print, etc. This is now possible, imo, because my massive confusion about the source of UnicodeError's is gone. However, I ended up reverting my changes: the code is complex and interrelated. I'll probably try again: the complexity is what I don't like.
