It appears that some convention is going to be needed to distinguish
between "word-oriented" and "free-form" abbreviations.

For example, I ran into troubles with the "nc" abbreviation when I
typed "func".  Otoh, the "tilde fix" must be applicable everywhere.

I'm not sure what the convention should be.  Stay tuned.
