I used the non-gui version, recordmydesktop, with the window ID, after hitting some snag I can't remember with the gui version, gtk-recordmydesktop. But I couldn't work out avconv parameters to convert the ogv format to something more common, and although vimeo seemed to understand it well enough to upload the video and present the first frame, it wasn't viewable there. recordmydesktop "just worked", which was nice.
