Yup, that's the right track, thanks Terry :) With the proviso that I wish to be able edit/paint in the candy side and have the results go back to the engine side. Shell to Inkscape (or whatever program is associated with the file type) is goodly stride to my dream. This is still operating within the "embedded" paradigm though, whereas I'm imagining an "integrated" one.
