paste-retaining-clones is how I create clones 99 times out of 100. I do
not look forward to figuring out how to conveniently create clones if
you take away paste-retaining-clones.

Paste-retaining-clones is conceptually straightforward and natural.
Something is very wrong, if it can't be implemented.
