You're not the first. I say all of that to suggest that I hope that clones don't go away to be replaced by something else that won't accomplish that. Clones will never go away. In the present (third or fourth) implementation of clones there is essentially zero cost in cloning arbitrarily much code. Internally, it's a matter of changing about 6 links. Right out of Knuth.
