I say all of that to suggest that I hope that clones don't go away to be
replaced by something else that won't accomplish that.

​Clones will never go away.  In the present (third or fourth)
implementation of clones there is essentially zero cost in cloning
arbitrarily much code.  Internally, it's a matter of changing about 6
links.  Right out of Knuth.
