​My apologies for the long delay in responding.  Imo,
paste-retaining-clones is working as expected, or perhaps I should say, as
*I* expect ;-)

paste-retaining-clones actually preserves the gnx's of the pasted nodes, so
the newly pasted root nodes, having the same gnx's as the "other" root
nodes, are shown as clones.
