The others_replacer and others_replacer concern me.  I don't see how they
handle nested @others properly.

Reading is even more difficult, and at present I don't follow the new code
well.

Despite these questions, a much simpler read/write code base would be
highly desirable. The situation is similar to the new import code.
Rewriting the code was a big step forward,  despite the inevitable bugs
that arose during the transition.
